・Tsukiji Outer Market is the lively food marketplace area that remains at Tsukiji even after the wholesale fish market moved to Toyosu. It’s a bustling grid of over 200 shops and eateries selling everything from the freshest seafood and sushi to tamagoyaki (Japanese omelets), dried goods, and street snacks. The vibe in the morning is electric with traders, locals, and tourists shoulder to shoulder seeking delicious bites and ingredients.
・You’ll also find professional-grade kitchenware and knife shops in the outer market – chefs still come to Tsukiji to get top-quality knives and utensils. This mix of food stalls and tool shops in narrow alleys, coupled with the enticing street foods you can nibble on, creates the unique atmosphere Tsukiji is famous for.
・Right next door is Tsukiji Hongwanji Temple, notable for its distinctive Indian-style architecture. The temple’s facade features stone carvings and a dome that make it look more like a South Asian palace or ancient Buddhist temple than a typical Japanese one. It belongs to the Jodo Shinshu sect, and is designated a Important Cultural Property of Japan.
・Tsukiji Hongwanji is open to all for worship or just looking around. The interior of the main hall is impressive with a large pipe organ and ornate fixtures – definitely worth a peek inside. On the temple grounds, there’s also a modern cafe (“Cafe Tsumugi”) and a gift shop. The temple serves as a serene rest spot for tourists and locals alike, offering a calm contrast to the bustling market across the street.
